Alexandre Oliva (lxo@gnusocial.net)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 06:05:14 JST Alexandre Oliva I'm not sure it's "the largest server"
if they don't know about federation, they may very well think mastodon.social is "the real thing"
and once they do learn about other servers, they may think those are other networks, but the one they heard of and wish to join because everyone is talking about it is the mastodon.social network.
it kind of makes sense, for someone unfamiliar with the notion of a distributed network (which AFAICT is most people coming from twitter)
that would be a backfiring marketing move from mastodon developers and primary hosts if so
would anyone who recently joined or considered joining mastodon.social confirm whether this sort of reasoning crossed their minds?
I wonder if deploying new instances in subdomains of mastodon.social would alleviate the ongoing centralization problem or even make it worse

Iron Bug (iron_bug@friendica.ironbug.org)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Nov-2022 06:05:16 JST Iron Bug @seb people mistake using of Fediverse for centralized social networks they used to. they think they should join "the largest server" to have many connections. I tried to explain the idea of Fediverse to newcomers. that decentralized network works in different way. but people are anyway stuck with the idea of "Mastodon as a replacement for Twitter". -
