This "Democratic Nationalism" that was on display these four days of the DNC has been scary to watch, esp. when even people like AOC and Bernie Sanders buy into it.

Democrats came up with a reactionary working class nationalism that could have made every MAGA proud, coupled with a typical Democratic agenda of social reform they labelled "freedom".

At least Kamala Harris didn't promise the Palestinians a "state" (for which Israel, not the U.S., would have to pay).

Still, hearing roaring "USA! USA!" chants at a Democratic convention gives me a chill. The Brown Shirts in their stomping marching had a left-flank too, back then, only to be dismantled in 1932, its advocates killed in 1934 (Georg Strasser in the Röhm purge).

The Democrats don't seem to realize how much they already dance to Trump's fiddle. There is no sane or "healthy" nationalism.

Or put differently (herein following German Federal President Gustav Heinemann): You don't "love" your country, you love your spouse.

@es0mhi was so kind to send a succinct and thoughtful reply on what may come *after* #peakfascism (something I haven't thought about yet): Is some form of "Progressive nationalism" on the horizon? https://mastodon.social/@es0mhi@tilde.zone/113033694230263851

I replied with a more verbose text, as always (taken in two screenshots to avoid an endless and unreadable thread): https://mastodon.social/@simsa02/113034221705706284

      FYI.

@simsa03@gnusocial.jp In principle I share your views on #peakfascism. But here you point out the real problem after we have left the peak behind us: not that hard-core nationalism will prevail but more progressive forces will fall back on nationalism to appeal the masses. (And not that Putin will prevail but that Europe will fall back into accepting war as a "Fortsetzung der Politik mit anderen Mitteln.") As far as the return of nationalism to fashion is concerned, Eastern Europe is also partly to blame: the glorification of the nation state here is often due to the fact that it died an unexpected “death at young age” (Estonia et al). And the situation in Ukraine, where a real national consciousness has only developed lately as a result of the Russian attack, is even worse: How are we going to explain to people that the nationalism that helped them through the war must now be put in the recycle bin quickly?

Attached: 2 images @es0mhi@tilde.zone @simsa03@gnusocial.jp Sadly your reply doesn't appear on my gs.jp account. Thank you for your thoughtful reply, it is stimulating as always. My answer turned out far larger than expected, so I put it into a screenshot.
