     @LukeAlmighty They are in direct competition for control. The way things have been going lately cracks are starting to show in and the USA is not seen as the juggernaut it once was. Oil is now trading in currencies other than the dollar, our political situation is very polarized, and our military might is being challenged.
     
     This is the EU's wet dream. They have their eye on expansion in the long-term

     I think in the long-run the EU and NATO probably intend for the USA to exhaust itself fighting their enemies (China, Russia, etc) to the point where it is no longer the dominant military power and they can slowly step in. Maybe they'll make deals with China down the road as well, since carbon-copying the CCP seems to be what every western government is after these days.

     Ok, sure. But I don't think that invalidates me theory. They see what is happening in the USA and they want to continue to encourage its weakening, to the point where our leaders will just sell out and make deals with them, the same way our leaders have done with China.
