Linux is only a kernel and writing "linux kernel" implies that Linux is more than a kernel.
If you wish to point out that Linux is only a kernel, writing; "the kernel, Linux", or "Linux, the kernel".
google just doesn't like that dastardly freedom-respecting requirement of the GPLv2 that makes it a case of copyright infringement to go and proprietize Linux and also that the installation information required to allow the user to change the software is required, so they decided to try to write their own kernel.
When it comes to the GPLv2 and MIT expat and legal headaches - the the GPLv2 is actually decently written, so it's not a legal headache when it comes to working out what is required (although you may have a legal headache if you intentionally infringe it and thus lose your license and you have to say what license you have to distribute the software).
As for MIT expat, that poorly written license is so short and misses so many things that you will face a legal headache working out if you need a patent license etc - companies only so readily approve MIT expat licensed stuff from individuals as nothing has ever happened to any business that has managed to infringe MIT expat from someone who loves writing proprietary software without getting paid.-
