  The dehumanization of the homeless has brought us to a point where existing without a home is now a criminalizable offense. That means poverty is being criminalized, public space is increasingly inaccessible, and existence is becoming harder for all of us.     @mekkaokereke Minneapolis is trying both approaches at once, and the results are…instructive. We have a relatively small permanently homeless population, probably only a few hundred people. Yet we perennially have highly visible tent encampments. The city keeps destroying them — and destroying these people’s worldly possessions along with them — over and over. It’s expensive. It’s cruel. But at least it…no wait, it’s totally ineffective. Encampments keep reappearing, over and over and over.

    Whenever we speak out against encampment evictions, someone always chimes in, “Well would •you• want homeless people living in tents near •you•?” and I’m like, “What the hell kind of question is that?! I don’t want people to be homeless and have to live in tents •anywhere•.”
