One thing I have become hyper aware of since transitioning:
How often bullshit 'smart' white men just fucking lie over and over and over again and fake expertise. Like they CANNOT just admit they don't fucking know.
Especially in a corporate sense.

One of the most eye-opening things for me when I started teaching was that for the first time I had a large sample of the relationship (or non-relationship) between the confidence students project with their behavior in class and the quality of the actual work they hand in.
I’ll let you guess the details on that one.

In brief:
There’s a “displaying / not displaying confidence in class” continuum, and there’s a “strong / weak work” continuum.
The correlation is not super strong; all four quadrants are occupied.
The gender balance of other three quadrants is pretty even, but the high confidence + weak work quadrant skews disproportionately male.
@inthehands @CharlotteEowyn @dgoldsmith could you specify? My experience as a TA was mostly that people who participated actively in class were also delivering above average hand-ins, while the most abhorrent stuff was submitted by names I never recognized (from class)

He’s on to a lot in that piece, although it bothers me immensely the way he diagnosis the problem as being 100% “women should be better self promoters“ and 0% “people are generally terrible at interviewing“ or “we reward people misrepresenting themselves instead of rewarding them for less sociopathic behavior.“

Clay Shirky wrote about this 15 yrs ago:
"I sat in the office of someone I admired and feared, someone who was the gatekeeper for something I wanted, and I lied to his face. We talked some more and he said “Ok, you can take my class.” [...]
And it looks to me like women in general, and the women whose educations I am responsible for in particular, are often lousy at those kinds of behaviors, even when the situation calls for it."

I can say from experience being male that we are relentlessly socialized from a very young age to figure out strategies for Never Being Wrong even when we are totally wrong!

It was a very contentious comments thread and he took no small amount of shit for that stance. I suspect that's why it no longer exists on his site and why I had to resurrect it from the internet archive
One thing I've long wondered though... was he pissed that he got played into giving the guy a much better recc than was merited? And was this essay his subtle way of rectifying that? That's the sort of clever solution I'd expect from the Clay I knew
