   @feld There probably wasn't much that they knew how to do at the time, but ISTM they could serve a warrant on the property company, recover the rental application with your SSN and the perpetrator's other info, and tracked them down that way.
   
   But they wouldn't do much without someone knowledgeable threatening a court fight. Probably not even today.
