   I wonder how they are counting that Germany was third largest after France and GB. eyeballing I'd assume Russia, China, and US were all bigger. I guess those aren't "colonial" because they are contiguous?

   idk, Hawaii became a US territory in 1898 and maybe it's different because it's an island? Alaska became US territory in 1867 but maybe that's different because it was sold and not colonized? idk, seems like a lot of caveats.

     @musicman People usually don't count land part of the country proper as colonialism.

     Hawaii: State, citizen rights, votes for the President, legally not a colony (even though history and reality today is 100% colonialism)
     Puerto Rico: Territory, no representation, colony

     @musicman Yeah, contemporary example of the principle, not a comment on who was the biggest empire at their maximum.

     The continental territories of the US before they became states should probably count, but probably doesn't. I don't have an intuitive feel for how they compare to the British, French and German holdings in 19th century Africa.
