   The `name` attribute on `a` elements is classed as “obsolete but conforming” in the #HTML spec, which is shortsighted when you consider hypermedia uses (e.g., htmx or Kitten, which extends upon htmx to provide a Streaming HTML workflow) where it is perfectly valid to use name attributes on any control that could trigger a server-side action to differentiate between elements. The id attribute does not function in the same way as it is not automatically sent to the server.

     I’m pretty sure no browser would drop support for this given the widespread usage but, just in case, if anyone here is involved in the spec discussions and can propose to reverse this decision it would be helpful to the Small Web in the future.

     (As such, I’ve sadly had to turn off the built-in HTML validator’s no deprecated attributes rule¹ as using a `name` attribute on an anchor tag is a valid use case in Kitten’s Streaming HTML workflow² if you want to trigger an action based on link activation.)
