   @JamesGleick if you remember their username and go to their page, you'd be able to get hints about what happened.

   If it says "This page doesn't exist" or something similar, they deleted their account for some reason. However, if it says "you do not have permission to view this page" or similar, it means they were banned.

   I hope this helps, even if just slightly.👍

     If someone you follow vanishes, leaving no trace, removed from your lists and bookmarks, what do you think happened? Did they decide to close their account? Were they blocked by your instance? Something else?
