"It’s not that they want Trump to win; it’s that the level of political cynicism they are being asked to adopt feels unbearable

These voters are not choosing between Harris and Trump. They are choosing between their sense of themselves as moral beings if they vote for #Harris and their sense of themselves if [do not]

If they vote for Harris in November, what will that say to the people of #Gaza — that they’d held their noses while people died?"

For a candidate who positions herself as caring, her failure to acknowledge their pain is especially jarring.

@mybarkingdogs Me neither. Also no one who vote shames bothers to factor in the EC. I could vote or not vote for whomever all day long, as could you. What I do or don't do also doesn't affect vote suppression in TX or GA. A lot of people here jsut want to punch left without engaging the issues at hand, and they project things onto me.

@inquiline I can *kind of* understand where they're coming from *to a degree* (as a trans man who does NOT want to see a trump/vance regime in the US for survival *and* who doesn't want to see nazi-level fascists at levers of power)

And yet that they'd call not voting inaction is like, WTF? It's a principled choice, and one SHOULD probably make to be a little less complicit/guilty - *especially* now that trump is looking more defeated by liberals/electoralists and leftist votes aren't needed

@inquiline Like, I personally am not judging *anyone* for their choice unless it's a direct vote for trump (and therefore *direct support to a fascist*) or RFK.

I'm not judging someone for not voting or for making a "wasted vote" for a third party or write in that reflects their own personal feelings and priorities and needs.

And yet I'm *also* not judging anyone who sees the calculus as necessary to electorally defeat outright fascists or save their own life

@textualdeviance Thanks for this reply. I really appreciated everything you had to say, because it wasn’t condescending at all, added a lot to the conversation, and we needed to hear it.

ETA: Ofc they blocked me for being snotty. Ofc, I *was* being snotty. But man oh man, the gall of reflexively lecturing M Gessen via my mentions about the imperfect politics here. I bet they did not look at the column, which is very thoughtful! 🥱

@inquiline Acknowledging reality isn't cynicism. Inaction in the face of grave danger isn't honor. It's cowardice. But I bet that moral superiority will be a comfort when Trump paves over Gaza and turns it into a resort.

Reality rarely gives perfect options, especially in politics. One either grows up and works within those limitations, or gets (rightly) labeled as an armchair activist.
