Wait, you guys get exception handling?
I've got stuff that's been under continuous development and expansion since the late 90s.
With zero budget for refactoring, updating, or extending things. I'm still struggling to find time to bring all our GUI aspects into the brave world of dynamic layouts and sizing.
OTOH, the users are pretty darn happy with it and keep plowing money into more capabilities so.....the duct tape is holding.
At the expense of my sanity.

They all want rockstars at entry level pay, and they all think the rockstars won't just leave in two years, leaving the team with a half finished, undocumented mess written to fit rockstars' coding style -- not anyone else's, with half the plan still written only in said rockstar's now departed head.
I'm STILL cleaning up after a "rockstars" damn near decade old mess.
Undocumented, poorly designed, unextensible MESS due to his "refactoring" of it (because he couldn't be bothered to learn how it worked, obviously it's better if he rewrote it)
Lightning fast, where it works (he left before he finished it), but without any NEED to be lightning fast.
Ridiculous amounts of blazing fast pointer arrays (with multiple scope errors he never noticed, but I did and fixed) that can't be altered without updating a thousand other places in the code, when speed was unnecessary.
Using classes where they don't fit. NOT using them where they do.
UGH.

@EmilyGB2023 @DivineKestrel @bridget I've been at my place for 12 years, and people think that's because it might a great place. It's not awful, but it's nothing special, but I'm fucking terrified of running the interview gauntlet again. I tried that a couple years ago, and it was clear people were looking for young rockstars who wanted to prove how much trivia they know.
Me? I take a broom and clean up the mess that everyone leaves behind, I make sure that things work, I write down the damned documentation and keep it in order (not that anybody ever reads it), I know where the bodies are buried and why what you're trying to do doesn't work in this particular knackered environment, I do special tasks for other teams because the interfaces are written by tech jerkwads who think if you're not also a tech jerkwad you might as well leave the industry.
And then I reduce my hours, go part time, and go out to circus where I can actually find *joy*.

No shit. Sadly I'm in an engineering firm. I love my job, I love my team, I love the work I'm doing.
But promotions? Nothing over project lead, really.
Core focus isn't software engineering, so......we don't really get considered.

"Quick, regurgitate trivia off the top of your head instead of using a search engine like a normal person".
"Quick, do a five day project in two days for FREE, in round six of your interview for a position we're going to fill internally".
"Under no circumstances will we actually test your ability to break down a problem, or how you think about coding, or look at your process, or test anything that matters"
You know what my strongest skill is as a developer -- and I'm a good one? I'm the only damn one in the whole department that can communicate with everyone else well
I get people on the same page, smooth over miscommunications, and can actually discuss things with clients and users without everyone being confused
And I'm also the best they have at "wtf" bugs and program architecture design
