Evangelicals who oppose "Trump worship" try to build a new movement
Christian ethicist David Gushee
— who calls himself “post-evangelical”
— has been touring the country since the fall with his new book,
“Defending Democracy From Its Christian Enemies.”
Gushee says it was motivated by the “anti-democratic tactics” Trump used to hold on to power after he lost reelection,
the U.S. Capitol insurrection of Jan. 6, 2021,
and the strong support many Christians gave Trump throughout.
Public Religion Research Institute found in October that White evangelicals were the most likely among faith groups to challenge some democratic norms.
Thirty-one percent said they agreed that “because things have gotten so far off track, true American patriots may have to resort to violence to save our country.”
To Gushee, Christian ethics call in 2024 for specificity:
excluding from public office candidates who don’t have a commitment to democratic norms and the rule of law
— including Trump.
Gushee said the U.S. democracy crisis is in good part the result of traditional evangelicals and other Christians reacting ferociously to a perception of cultural change and lost power.
