   I really wish instance admins that have decided to shut down their instance, would first offer to transfer ownership to someone that's willing to take on the task.

   Sometimes it doesn't work very well because the admins have different idealogies that don't match, leading to a bad experience for users post transfer.

   However, maybe that risk is worth it, if sometimes it works out.

   Certain domains that have come and gone over the years were REALLY good for Fedi instances and it just sucks seeing them go to waste.

     @BeAware This would be nice but it also requires a lot more forethought: The domain is the least important part of a server. It's direct access to everyone's data, being handed to someone the users did not entrust it to.

     I sort of wish there was a trustworthy "service" one could hand-off an otherwise-shutting-down instance to in order to keep it alive with clear accountability or something, but if people didn't think about that up front... shutting down might be the "safest" choice.

     @ocdtrekkie that's a good point.

     I was thinking specifically about admins of other instances that are already trustworthy.

     Though, there's not an example of this happening that I know of.🤷♂️

     It's just wishful thinking.
