I'm proud to say that I can count the number of times I've watched the Olympics on one hand.
And I feel shitty even acknowledging those few misused fingers.
I'm proud to say that I can count the number of times I've watched the Olympics on one hand.
And I feel shitty even acknowledging those few misused fingers.
And full disclosure:
I was terrible at sports as a kid and I was bullied mercilessly by my peers because of it. It was made clear to me from my earliest years that male supremacy and violence are deeply entwined with the institution of sports and that sports was largely a symbolic stand in for organized group violence.
It's war played on a field with lesser forms of group nationalism.
The fact that people invest so much emotional energy in forming group-centered identities tied in with sports teams is a major tell regarding its conformist toxicity.
I'll say it again:
Sports models war like nationalism on a smaller scale. It is patriarchal violence played out under the rubric of supposedly civil public events.
Ask yourself why riled up sports fans collectively, violently tear shit apart and fight in the streets after a sporting event.
It feeds the same war like impulses.
And again, having survived the emotional and physical abuse of my school peers, I'm pretty clear that organized group violence and sports are inextricably the the two faces of a patriarchal Janus, sitting in plain view, with all of us pretending that it's good, civil fun.
Bullshit.
Seriously, sports of all kinds bore the living hell out of me.
The last time I watched anything related to the Olympics, it was figure skating. But that's more like dancing and it's kind of pretty to watch.
All in all, I have absolutely no desire to support the Olympics or any other large sports organization.
I despise the institution of sports itself. It's a bunch of bullying eugenicist shit that tickles the fancy of aspiring supremacists of many stripes.
No thank you.
