   Hypothesis: The purpose of transphobia simply is for transphobes to claim the power to point at a person and deny their womanhood, or their humanity. On the pro-trans side we're very concerned with how gender is defined and it being defined broadly, but transphobes aren't *actually* interested in any underlying idea or theory, they just want a pretense to lead attack mobs

     @mcc yeah. they're legitimizing this kind of attack, so even if they're "wrong" (in the sense of incorrect. they're obviously morally wrong) this time, they make it easier to do next time

     @mcc the classic ingroup-outgroup divide: for some people, the most important thing is to be able to scoff at and judge someone in the outgroup. everything else - includng the justifications and any sort of reasoning - is secondary

     @mcc This must be true, because anything else would require transphobes to actually build some competence on gender issues, which they´re clearly unwilling to do.

     They´re small people, hateful and stupid, and that´s all there is to it.

     @mcc yeah there is an intense Freudian self-deception dynamic going on? There is such a stark contradiction between the bigot's persecution mindset/addiction to outrage and their actual bullying and controlling behavior. This dynamic is not an earnest pursuit of truth and not something where reasoning and nuanced concepts (or even just facts) are at all useful

     My thinking is that it underlines how much transphobia is actually an attack on women, as a whole.

     The moment a woman steps outside the list of activities that these groups deem acceptable for women, or looks different than their standards of beauty for women, she is attacked as "not really a woman."

     It's fundamentally the same as the attacks "if you were a real woman you'd stay home with your kids, not take a man's job" from *those* bigots. (Same group, mostly.)
