    I'm having trouble getting macOS to update its current location. It still thinks I'm in North Carolina, even though I'm in Connecticut. Can't find GPS maybe? (Is there somewhere to see error messages for that?) My phone knows where I am, but two MacBooks, about 5 ft apart, both are having trouble updating location.

      I think this is it. MacBooks don’t have GPS at all…do they? I was however under the impression that they use nearby detected SSIDs and not just the one you’re connected to.

      @cocoaphony Are they on wifi with a working internet connection? I’m not exactly sure how they get the location (I think there are multiple sources) but from my experience, before having an internet connection they remain stuck at the last location.

      @arroz @cocoaphony
      Oh duh. Of course it wouldn’t make sense to keep the whole SSID location database downloaded for offline use, would it?

      @inthehands @cocoaphony Macs don’t have GPS. They use nearby SSIDs but they need an internet connection to query those SSIDs to a central server. However I think they also use the external network IP to obtain a location. And, if they are tethered with the iPhone sharing network, I think the iPhone runs some sort of location server that the devices with no GPS can use to obtain location. Which of these is still true and in what conditions I’m not sure. 😅

      @cocoaphony @arroz
      Or gosh…I suppose it probably uses the MAC address (or whatever the 802.11 equivalent is called) and not SSID, doesn’t it?

      @inthehands @arroz hmmm. Hadn’t thought about the SSID specifically. I named my networks the same thing here as in Raleigh. I’m wondering if it’s put that into the database and it’ll stay locked for some time until it gets some data telling it it’s changed.
