     #China on Wednesday carried out a combat patrol to test "strike capabilities" near #ScarboroughShoal in the #SouthChinaSea, a flashpoint area which is within the #Philippines' exclusive economic zone.

     Scarborough Shoal is 240 kilometers (150 miles) west of the Philippines' main island of #Luzon and nearly 900 kilometers from the nearest major Chinese land mass of #Hainan.

     In a press conference, #PhilippineNavy spokesperson for #WestPHSea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said “the total reclaimed area within our exclusive economic zone (#EEZ) and out of our EEZ, roughly around 3,000 hectares. This includes [China’s] major bases.”

     The 2,400-ton Vietnamese Coast Guard vessel #CSB8002 would arrive in #Manila on Monday for a four-day visit that would include joint #SearchAndRescue drills, as well as fire and explosion prevention training.

     The Vietnamese Defense Ministry said the CSB 8002's visit was of "profound political significance" .

     The Southern Theatre Command said on Wednesday that it had carried out air and sea combat patrols “near #HuangyanIsland” – the Chinese name for the #ScarboroughShoal – to test “strike capabilities”. The exercises appear to be a response to same-day military manoeuvres by the #UnitedStates, #Australia, #Canada and the #Philippines.
