JohnThe most polite and friendly rejections I've ever gotten were from asking out friends. Granted, they sometimes feel the need to be extra gentle; one person took that to the point that I wasn't 100% what she was getting at for a while, and then I actually felt bad that I put her in this awkward situation. Would've been better to be direct like in your illustration.
