The notion of a "basilisk" is really symbolic of a group of marginalized people who are viscerally, reflexively hated because they violate social norms that people have so deeply internalized as a part of their own identities and sexuality, that they loose all sense of logic, empathy, and sanity when interacting with people who violate those norms.

timberwraith (timberwraith@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 24-Jul-2024 00:03:39 JST timberwraith Cis people's bigotry toward us has ALWAYS been about cis people's fears and insecurity about how they relate to and rely upon patriarchal norms to define themselves, to delineate the shape and behaviors of their sexuality, and to guide their place in the strata of social hierarchy.
Many of them can't see this or understand their own deeply irrational responses because their reaction is bound in such a gut-level patriarchal prejudice that has been inculcated in them since birth.

Some people feel such a reflexive fear & disgust over someone breaching social norms that essentialize a sex/gender binary as immutable, they completely loose it and become obsessed with annihilating people who elicit that fear & disgust.
People get hung up on anything that challenges their sense of "normalcy" & "propriety" around sexuality & gender, and cis people's reflexive disgust toward trans people is driving their will to exterminate us.
