i used to joke "all software becomes realplayer over time", but most people aren't of that nerd vintage to get the reference,
and we have better examples of the way in which software becomes a vehicle for a brand, pushing up against every api to get your attention, flooding you with notifications
but in hindsight with the rise of chatbots and behaviour tracking built in, it feels like every piece of software is becoming bonzi buddy instead

@tef man I would read a full-length scientific paper examining how much software has or has not become realplayer in the last 2 decades, that would be an amazing thing to analyze

it was ad supported from the outset, and was always doing things like "i'm your player for everything!" and stealing associations from other programs, repeatedly
it then started living permanently on screen and popping up notifications to remind you it existed
as "we're the most important internet software" makes investors sleep well at night, even if it's only acting that way

@tef @glyph The file association stealing bit is the part I remember most. So annoying. Also, vaguely, something about trying to take over some links in the browser?
I remember being relieved when Windows media player got to the point where it was useful, and that being mostly so I could quit bothering with Realplayer?
