@ntnsndr reminds me of an old system (though more groupwork than class participation) developed at my institution but used less and less - https://sparkplus.com.au/using-sparkplus.php - from memory, a key component (picking up from Ostrom's commons management principles) was getting students to specify the participation criteria at the outset - like writing a constitution for the group
