i gotta say if your entire schitck is "we're the open web! we're not like that giant advertising company" then you should kinda expect a backlash from "we shipped an opt-out surveillance device without effectively telling anyone"

no matter how well engineered said device is—and no amount of "well, this is just how the web works, be realistic" is gonna undo that breach of trust

this is before you even get to ask "is targeted advertising even necessary?" let alone useful or effective

as far as i can make out, targeted advertising is about making advertisers feel in control, and forcing them to rebuy ads for different demographics over and over

it is very funny to me that most tech employees will have gone through a mandatory webinar on the dangers of spear fishing and targeted attacks, and how they're used to exploit people

only to close the tab and go back to building devices that do just that. at the end of the day, it's only spam when someone didn't pay the right people

someone has already gone "technically it's not targeting", which doesn't really address the whole "this is a breach of trust" thing

and well, forgive me for using "targeting" as a short hand for "measuring ad impact rates by surveillance of users, so that advertisers can minmax their advert spend", but again, it doesn't matter

as that's how users perceive a black box in the browser collecting statistics for advertisers to maximise their click through rates-especially the users firefox has

when futurama said "technically correct is the best kind of correct" it was satire, y'know

again, main point in big letters

if you build an audience on the basis of "respecting privacy and user choice" and ship an opt-out data collection service without telling anyone, you really fucked up

no matter how fancy the math is
