cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.world)'s status on Thursday, 11-Jul-2024 23:36:29 JST cool_boy_mew Woke up with water in the basement, just a small water spill coming from a wall after an especially bad rainfall, a tad worrying, but probably won't happen often
I found the most likely culprit, my dumbass Dad did not close the outside electrical outlet cover, the outlet is dripping wet, that's probably where the water came in
What to do? How possibly dangerous is this?-

There probably isn't much chance of electrocution even if you were to do it now if that electrical outlet was properly rated for outside installation - but there's no reason to risk it. -

cool_boy_mew (coolboymew@shitposter.world)'s status on Friday, 12-Jul-2024 00:19:44 JST cool_boy_mew @moth_ball yeah if you check the comments it would have gotten wet even with it closed it seems, so either it's really made for this, or the spill is coming from something else -

triodug (triodug@fedi.triodug.com)'s status on Friday, 12-Jul-2024 00:21:18 JST triodug @coolboymew @moth_ball also most outdoor outlets are GFls (or tied into one) that shut themselves off when a short is detected. -

Even better. It’s a lot cheaper than an electrician testing things and way cheaper than a fire.

An outlet tester is super cheap. I tested every outlet with one when I moved here

Charles Zi Britannia (czb@eientei.org)'s status on Friday, 12-Jul-2024 05:12:29 JST Charles Zi Britannia @leyonhjelm @triodug @coolboymew @moth_ball I always drill a 1/8" hole in the bottom of handi-boxes like that. They fill with water if you don't. Sometimes I do multiple holes since some have multiple low spots that need to drain inside. Even if you try sealing the gasket with sealant they will fill with condensation so the holes are the answer with boxes like that. At least in my climate. triodug likes this.
