@sun @arcana @lucy Wikipedia says the origin of the term is disputed. The most likely explanation seems to be a similar origin to "wise cracker", a person who talks/brags a lot. And keep in mind, even if it refers to whip cracking, animals were often also whipped. See the attached picture: "a pair of two crackers". I doubt those two were slave owners.
