      So what you're saying could be summarized as an ounce of laziness by a developer causes the pounds of problems for end users?

      It's kind of like the reason everything new sucks really is just piss poor quality programmers.

      There's a counterpoint to that I believe is valid: a lot of updates break things—I would say it feels like all of them, and make things worse, and so fundamentally the idea of updates has become a contested aspect of being an end user.

      Either way, the problem looks like laziness on the part of a programmer.
