@flisk @7666 @mer you guys are discussing the fine details of the definition of fascism but when it's used on this network it means anybody to the right of a far-left activist from ten years ago.

@7666 @mer i think what you're describing is just despotism, fascism is a bit more complex than "dictatorial rule by force". there's key elements of cultural narratives that are endemic to fascism, which is why it only really emerged in the last century. we've had simple rule by force for as long as we've had organized society, probably even before

@flisk @mer I think my overarching point is: fascism is simple, it's the exertion of a uniform central ideology, enforced by force, and I don't think it's terribly political except when fascist leaders start manufacturing reasons to justify their fascism to sleep better at night / confuse the average person into going "hmm that's reasonable carry on", but strip away those layers and it's still just "do what I say or else" with extra steps

@7666 @mer wait what are we even talking about here? how does this relate to the original discussion?

@7666 @mer the "i will not" people don't generally care about "or else" and there's a lot of historical examples of this

@flisk @mer "or else" takes over at that point, which is just the application of force in one flavor or another. It's pretty much required because lack of sufficient coercive force immediately topples a fascist regime because other people will go "yea nah I won't either"

@7666 @mer the problem is when "i will not" enters the room, which often happens when you try the "do what i say" style of politics

@mer @flisk what politics do you need beyond "do what I say" and it's enforcing cousin "or else", it's very simple

@flisk okay true, i've gotten off track
the "fascism is mostly aesthetics" is about how fascism has no real politics under the violence but they do like themselves some cool symbols

@mer arguably due to fascist tendencies in the responsible governments

@flisk it's not relativism, we got two genocides happening right now (aside from the palestinian one) just because of mineral rights

@mer i don’t vibe with this relativism. there’s no serious argument to be made that all political ideologies have the same human cost

@flisk all politics kill people
liberals kill people for line to go up
fascist kill people because they saw an MGMT edit and it made them feel cool and trad

@mer yeah aside from the killing people which is a pretty big one

gotta love people who think symbols of fascist organizations are playthings
