     @NotImportant tonic water has quinine in it which was the medicine that the british used to prevent malaria.
     
     I don't know if gin and tonic was actually a way that people took their dosage or simply a way of using it after people became acclimated to the bitter taste.

     @NotImportant quinine is also another medicine that is extracted from a tree bark. I assume it was used by the plant to keep insects off.
