   Short answer: It's a collective name for Mastodon and other similar networks which are all linked together.

   Long answer: It's thousands of independent social media servers connected together by the ActivityPub technical standard. Most people are on servers running Mastodon software but not everyone.

     @oortville @jaybeas @feditips apparently there are also other non-Mastodon social media instances also connected to the fediverse, but they are much smaller.
