I've updated my modification of the AO3 Floating Comment Box script to work with archiveofourown.gay (in addition to archiveofourown.org)
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/499115-ao3-floating-comment-box
Script originally written by ScriptMouse.
I modified it a couple of years ago to put `blockquote` tags around extracted quotes (in addition to italics).
ScriptMouse didn't define a license when they originally published the script, which means that I'm not actually entitled to publish a modified version of it without their permission.
I hope that one day they'll see my comment about modifying it and either give me their blessing or tell me to unpublish my modified version.

Either way, I'm grateful to them for writing & publishing the script.
AO3 Floating Comment Box made it so much easier for me to leave comments on fics.
Lots of times I have just not commented on fics that I really enjoyed, because I couldn't think of something to say in the moment, or didn't have the social battery to even leave an incoherent keysmash.
With the floating comment box, whenever I read something that moves me (joyful, horny, funny, angst, fear, amazement, whatever), I can select the text, add it to the comment box (with quote formatting) and then drop in a comment or even just an emoji.
Then the author at least knows that those particular words caused a reaction in me.
I think that's a thing authors like...? Anyway I'm sure that most authors would like it more than receiving no comment at all, which was my previous default behaviour.
@lookitmychicken it is definitely something authors like!! i love when people tell me specific things that worked for them, whether it's a full quote, pointing out a word choice, or just describing a plot point they enjoyed. :blobcheerbounce:
If you'd like to try this script:
1. Install a userscript manager https://greasyfork.org/en/help/installing-user-scripts (I use TamperMonkey https://www.tampermonkey.net/)
2. Install AO3 Floating Comment Box from this page: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/499115-ao3-floating-comment-box
3. Go read a fic. In the top left corner, there should be a little blue box with an O in it.
4. Click the little blue box. It turns into a little red box with an X in it, and a comment box opens at the bottom of the page.
5. Drag over some text in the fic.
6. In the floating comment box, select [Insert Selection]. The selection is added to the floating comment box, with HTML tags around it.
7. Type your comment below the quote.
8. Keep adding more quotes and comments until you've finished reading.
9. Optional: you can toggle the comment box on and off with the little icon in the top left, and it retains what you've quoted & written so far.
10. When you're ready to post the comment, select [Add to Comment Box] in the floating comment box. Your quotes & comments get pasted into the main comment box.
11. On the AO3 page's comment box, select [Comment].
When I'm reading a chaptered fic, I like to read chapter by chapter, and leave comments as I go.
@lookitmychicken Definitely something authors like!!
