My view on the environmental impact of generative models is that while it isn't the biggest issue with the models (not by a long shot, honestly) it is the biggest issue facing society as the climate crisis will literally end society if we don't ramp up our response.

Seems to be a human trait.
We invented massively more efficient lighting tech, did we reduce our power consumption on lighting? Not really, we just installed even more lighting instead.
Now we've worsened the light pollution problem. -
