   My view on the environmental impact of generative models is that while it isn't the biggest issue with the models (not by a long shot, honestly) it is the biggest issue facing society as the climate crisis will literally end society if we don't ramp up our response.

     Seems to be a human trait.
     We invented massively more efficient lighting tech, did we reduce our power consumption on lighting? Not really, we just installed even more lighting instead.
     Now we've worsened the light pollution problem.

     @electric_gumball @baldur @danjac Jevons paradox, it's called, and yeah, that's why The Market isn't ever going to solve these kinds of systemic overconsumption problems.

     (Then again, I've never driven a car in my entire life, at the age of 47, because the greenhouse effect has been settled science for over 35 years and we all should have known better decades ago, so I'm exactly the kind of environmentalist hippie who would say something like this. I also haven’t set foot in a plane for over four years.)
