     @caekislove @leyonhjelm Zoning is why American cities suck now, and why all the remaining "good parts" were grandfathered in from before zoning laws ans somehow managed to escape being bulldozed to build a freeway or parking lot.

     @leyonhjelm The entire concept of zoning is rife with corruption. A crook with political connections can make guaranteed free money by buying land zoned as "toxic waste dump" and then use their pull to get it rezoned as "luxury condos".

     BTW, every piece of land in Houston is defacto zoned as "toxic waste dump". We've got schools next to strip clubs next to megachurches.

     @caekislove @leyonhjelm That's because it wasn't about race, despite schizos on fedi trying to make absolutely everything about race. Zoning started out all about NIMBYs wanting endless suburbs of manicured lawns and white picket fences without those pesky shops and businesses which might have a car come park in front occasionally and "disturb the peace". Retards with more power than sense ran with the idea and decided that nothing should be near anything except a freeway because that's Smart (TM).

     Racial segregation was accomplished by pricing out anyone you didn't like, which worked fine for all whites who weren't just as poor as the blacks. That is, until they voted for infinite free mortgages so they could get a slightly bigger McMansion. Pricey neighborhoods don't depend on zoning, even now. Some depend on deed restrictions mandating high levels of luxury, but that's not zoning.

     Good zoning will keep the riff raff out. Bad zoning spreads throughout a city. And yes, good zoning typically means keeping nice housing away from the commercial and industrial zones, while putting some shitty developments near them.
     
     Really good zoning will actually surround the lower tier developments with commercial and only leave a few roads in and out for easier policing and control.

     I don’t understand why @gentoobro is so defensive about a discussion of discriminatory municipal policies. This is a historical norm and continues more quietly in modern government. I haven’t even taken a position on it other than that it didn’t succeed at its goals in the long term regardless of what you think of those goals

     @gentoobro @Humpleupagus @leyonhjelm I'm biased because I live in Houston but I think it's actually quite nice that there's over 100 establishments where I can buy liquor by the drink within walking distance of my house.

     EDIT: In many of which, I can amuse myself by watching naked women dance within inches of my face.

     @caekislove @Humpleupagus @leyonhjelm There's literally a strip club three blocks away from where I live. Probably a half dozen bars within that radius too. And of course I don't have to walk more than 100 feet to buy bread or beer.

     Zoning is an utter disaster, and creates desolate, soul-crushing cities.

     True story. Several years back, my wife pulls into the driveway, kids in the back, and a car pulls up right after. I immediately knew it wasn't supposed to he here. I went a grabbed my glock. When I come back, a guy stumbles out of the car and begins to approach my wife. Not wanting to escalate, I open the door just a bit so the guy can see me and see that I'm armed.
     
     My wife confronts him, and instinctually so to protect her babies. Guy gets spooked and starts walking.
     
     Several minutes later we hear cops. Turns out that the guy went across the street and knocked on one of my neighbors doors. That neighbor was renting and in the airforce. 6'5" nigger who was definitely juicing. Fucking huge. The neighbors kid answered the door. Guy punches him in the face and tries to steal his car. Big nigger comes out, punches guy in the face. The cops found him passed out half a block away.
     
     Guy was set to be appear the next day for heroin possession and other crimes several counties away and skipped bail. Car was stolen. He had hit a curb at some point and popped both tires on the right side. He was looking for another car, which is why he followed my wife in. Sucks to be him.

     @leyonhjelm @caekislove @gentoobro Hardcore leftists aren't even wrong about certain kinds of racism, like a lot of how the country is set up is to ensure the well-off don't have to interact with black people outside of a few carefully filtered exceptions. Of course you're not allowed to go into detail about why they want that so badly.
