I think of patriotism as different from nationalism or jingoism. People often do mix those ideas together. I think it's patriotic to try to live up to certain ideals such as equality and social justice, and to want a country that cares for its citizens. It's patriotic to care. I also think we should link such ideals to the concept of national security, which is thought of mainly in terms of threats rather than in making citizens' lives better. Let's redefine patriotism.
