The first typewriter to be commercially successful was patented by Christopher Latham Sholes, Frank Haven Hall, Carlos Glidden & Samuel W. Soule.The typewriter was initially referred to as the "Sholes and Glidden Type-Writer." The machine featured a keyboard with letters arranged in an early version of the QWERTY layout, which was developed to reduce jamming by separating commonly used letter pairs.
