To think I was recommending System76 to people. Won’t be making that mistake again.

Apparently caring about accessibility is “virtue signaling” and “concern trolling”.

Well, I know exactly the kind of people who use those terms and they’re not folks I want to have anything to do with or will be recommending to anyone else in the future.

If you’re not in the US, you should buy from a local shop anyway. In the EU, we’re spoilt for choice with Tuxedo, Slimbook, StarLabs, etc.

For eight years Fedora has been shipping GNOME with a broken screen reader! EIGHT YEARS! (Wayland has been default on Fedora for eight years – since Fedora 25, released in 2016.) And a hundred-billion-dollar corporation like IBM ships operating systems today based on it with a broken screen reader. What is an ableist culture? One in which the people who call this out get ostracised. #ableism #fedora #redHat #IBM #gnome #cosmic #wayland #a11y #system76 #linux https://fosstodon.org/@soller/112646375569571307

@aral I'm not sure I follow. I saw the "argument", and I don't see why it happened in the first place.

Also, in the US, what does that leave you with? Just @frameworkcomputer That's not a lot of options.

@heydon What I mean is I’ve seen “virtue signalling” etc. used before by certain folks to attempt to silence folks arguing for social justice.

@aral I mean... concern trolling is a real and rather troubling thing, usually perpetrated by bigots. It's a far cry from speaking up about human rights! So it seems like these folks are talking bollocks on multiple levels.

@heydon Yep. And no need to thank me. Can’t keep my damn mouth shut apparently :) And you do more than your share and then some.

@aral Absolutely, I've seen that too. It's willful misappropriation of terminology. "Virtue signalling" is used almost exclusively by fascism-adjacent asshats. "Having virtues is bad" is such a ridiculous stance. But the term originally meant to appeal to normative virtues within a group. Technically, fascists being all faschy in front of other fascists is virtue signalling.

Sorry, just interested in etymology. Thank you for speaking out about that stuff.

@adamsandy @purism Well, here’s the irony: Unlike PopOS, which ships with X11 by default, PureOS, afaik, ships with Wayland by default and thus with a broken screen reader by default. So Purism’s computers, tablets, and phones are, by default, are inaccessible for disabled people who use screen readers. And yet, unlike System76, they haven’t tried to publicly shame me for calling out the fact. So best thing to do is to ask their thoughts on this and see how they respond…

@adamsandy @purism … That said, Purism adopted the Ethical Design Manifesto (https://puri.sm/posts/we-love-ethical-design/) so I would be very surprised if they responded in the way System76 did because accessibility is a core tenet of the manifesto. (1/2)

Also, IBM/Fedora have been shipping Wayland by default with a broken screen reader for EIGHT YEARS. The former literally has trillions of dollars it could have used a tiny percentage of to fix this at any point during that time. Purism is a tiny company struggling to keep its head above water.

In any case, @purism, looking forward to your opinion on all this as well as thoughts about what can be done to improve the situation in the future. (2/2)
