I’m always mad at some of my fellow citizens for how spoiled they are on.. literally anything. But living in Singapore IS a bubble like that. You can have dairy from Hokkaido and burrata from Australia, Italy, even Laos (I just found out about this). You can have every style of ramen. You can have anything you want (as long as you don’t want the dangerous things, like freedom of speech and gay marriage, or like, rights).

I miss it and I hate it and I desperately love it.

I never ate anything frozen until I left it; everything was fresh.

I never had to make food for myself; food was cheap and plentiful.

I never had to eat the same item or cuisine twice, even in one week.

I now know that living like that is just so weird and wonderful, and I miss it very much. I really resented leaving that food culture / food access.

But today as I observe mid summer cherries, and how different they taste compared to last week, I get it, I think.

This is why when someone asks my mother, would you live in America with your daughter, she laughs and she says, but what would I do without one hundred noodles for breakfast??

I feel that way every day, at breakfast, when I do not have one hundred different types and styles of noodles to choose from for $3 each.

Sometimes I think about how weird it was to have grown up in a city state that doesn’t grow its own food and that doesn’t have seasons. ‘Eat seasonally’ was an intellectual, not lived concept: we could get anything, from anywhere, anytime, from both north and south hemispheres. Our butter came from Australia, NZ, Japan, France, Italy; even chicken came in from another country.

And yet, a lot of lived experiences with spices, cooking cultures. Maybe only HK is like that.

@skinnylatte Maybe it is a feeling when living in a well-connected market garden.

I was on vacation in some rural eastern European area and decided to buy stuff directly from the peasants: "Sorry no potatoes today, it was raining yesterday".

I realized how much I was shaped by the supermarket culture.
