@graf Fun fact:
You know those pipes on old ships they used for voice communication across decks?
The sound of a voice is transmitted by vibrations of the pipe transmitting the sound-waves coherently along spaces and distances they would otherwise never reach to convey orders due to the acoustic qualities of the piping.
Thus orders from the bridge reach all parts of the ship's "body".
Now if for whatever reason a comm pipe got squashed anywhere along its length, the acoustic qualities of the pipe are ruined and can no longer effectively transmit the vocal sound-waves coherently if at all. The captain could be screaming at his end for more boiler power or whatever and the engine room would never hear it.
Anyway, your nerve is trapped or was trapped, i.e. being/has been pinched somewhere along the length from your brain to the hand. The nerve fibre is being/was compressed to the point of impairing its ability to function. Depending on the nature of the squashing, how damaged the nerve is, it may resolve itself in time with a return of function, or surgery may be able to fix it.
