@lanodan That happened with Ubuntu for the longest time in late 2022. They were shipping a version that was broken on Macs. For my CI pipelines I had to patch it.

Flat namespace on newer macOS · Issue #81 · kspalaiologos/bzip3
I'm having an issue building a homebrew formula to package bzip3 for macOS due use of flat namespaces. Here is the relevant discussion: https://github.com/orgs/Homebrew/discussions/4091#discussionc...

@kspalaiologos Yeah I've seen similar things quite often.
Reminds me of why I'm glad Gentoo easily allows to regenerate autoconf/libtool stuff (and also why I sometimes pick VCS tarballs rather than dist tarballs).

@kspalaiologos Autotools even depends on perl.
And pretty sure in most distros you'd end up with circular dependencies.

Like https://github.com/fosslinux/live-bootstrap/blob/master/parts.rst#61autoconf-252 has a stupidly long chain to get to recent autotools.

@lanodan There are many things that I don't like about autotools, this is one of them. Why would *anyone* want a dist package?

But, I guess, nobody should have an obligation of having autotools/automake/libtool/m4 installed just to build a C project.
