"In a campaign where Democrats seek to contrast their values with those of Trump & his neofascist supporters, supposedly liberal Democrats are alienating a significant proportion of the electorate—not only young students of conscience & of color but also Black churches & elderly white Midwesterners horrified by the images coming out of Gaza. As the stakes rise, the distinctions are blurring, & liberals have only themselves to blame" https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/liberal-police-state-campus-protests/
@inquiline Centrists and Liberals always consider protesters The Enemy, at least in a more "have they no respect??" kind of way and less "Shoot the commie kids" kind of way. The desperate need for "decorum" is a very Centrist value and permeates everything from trying to get people of color to not talk about racism on social media, to scolding their children for not wanting to talk with their racist or transphobic uncle, to siccing riot police on students for daring to not wanting genocide.
This ⬆️ very good piece (by a USC colleague, Sandy Tolan) connects the militarized repression on campuses of #GazaProtests to the recent arc of the #WarOnTerror, repression of #StandingRock and #BlackLivesMatter, and moves in many states to criminalize protest. That is a really worthwhile intervention (in some ways more important than comparing to Vietnam era campus protests).
