Hot take!!! There is no such thing as a game industry.

The term "industry" initially referred to, well, industry! Factories, machines, production of goods.

Nowadays, it's used as a synonym for "sector", like the gaming sector is often called the "gaming industry". I think that's a bad analogy though. It makes us think of it as if they were making commercial goods and products, instead of art and beauty.

Calling gaming an "industry" is like referring to art as "content". It's an awful capitalistic view of the world that treats artworks as a good.

Similarly, there is no film industry. There is also no software industry. Software is not a product, it's works that have no ownership. There is no service industry, that's probably the most perverse one, treating the work of people as a good.

Industry is for industry. You can use it when there's a tangible good being produced, but don't use it for the work of people.

I don't disagree that the meaning of industry as a synonym of "sector" exists, but it's bad. We should oppose this usage.

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be I've seen this take here before: https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html#SoftwareIndustry

But it is indeed probably not a bad idea to apply the same logic outside of just software and any other things that people call "industry" that aren't industry.

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be Using the wrong words for things narrows your thinking. Basically what Newspeak tries to achieve on purpose but by accident.

This is not grammar Nazism, "industry = sector" is a meaning that exists and it's not linguistically wrong. My argument is that it's morally wrong!

Avoiding that use signals that you draw the difference between products, works of art, and labour. :neocat_heart:

@iro_miya on the contrary, gaming industry is industry, with factory-like consistency and quality - look at all the pokemon games, all the FIFAs, all the bethesda games, there is about as much art and substance in those games as there is art on bag of toilet paper. Industry is pure profit and mass-produced conveyor-made games, if it happens to be good that just means more profit.

Term "Industry" is always used in opposition to "craft", indie games tend to be more on "craft" side - people who want to make a game, and profit, while one of the goals isn't the ultimate and sole and primary purpose. Industry HAVE to make games otherwise they stop existing. Craft can do it whenever they like, Industry HAVE to release by holiday season to maximize profits.
