   Thomas Ligotti's The Shadow at the Bottom of the World (a short story collection).

   Non-fiction, but Ian Mortimer's The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England for its attention to detail.

   Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett does character masterfully.
