This week’s spike of AAPL pricing is visible on pretty much every time range graph you care to look at.

It’s massive. Maybe their biggest short term gain ever?

And considering how the stock normally behaves after wwdc keynotes it’s a huge outlier.

Unfortunately this is going to send the message that adding creepy implementations of AI, with all that negative baggage it brings with it, was the right strategy.

Of course I’d like to think that it’s a response to a company doing “AI“ in a way that puts an emphasis on user privacy. But I am not optimistic enough to think that privacy is the reason for the spike.

@inthehands they suddenly stopped talking about privacy when the ChatGPT button was rolled out.

I have my undies in a bunch about the way the public and the press have misunderstood that button. The ChatGPT stuff is perfunctory, isolated, clearly delineated, almost an afterthought. It’s the equivalent of Siri/Safari supporting Google search. Yes, that has nonzero privacy impact, but it’s not even remotely the pervasive “now OpenAI reads all your emails” nightmare people assume it is.

Yet I’d bet money that very misunderstanding is what’s inflated the stock price.

…or deftly juiced their share price? I truly have no idea what the rationale was muddying their message that way.

@inthehands it was handled very clumsily by Apple. They were very careful to highlight all the privacy protection. And then they tossed that out with “oh hey you can use Siri with ChatGPT”

      Apple fucked up

Scoff if you want, and I’ll scoff with you, but seriously: given how executives think, I could easily believe any given company will tie their own shoelaces together just because that’s what investors want.

@dwineman @inthehands I honestly don't think “the market” cares one whit about user privacy.

@schwa @inthehands Investors probably care about avoiding a backlash like the one Microsoft is getting over Recall.

@schwa @inthehands It may just be a response to all the other big companies who launched AI products in recent weeks aggressively faceplanting on privacy and accuracy while Apple’s is the only one that seems to be sort of maybe trying not to do that.
