There is probably half a dozen interlocking reasons that came together to turn Google into dog shit. They definitely hire some competent people but I think they leaned really hard into hiring a bunch of people without any skills at all because they checked a bunch of demographic boxes, because they believe their own nonsense

@ashiisbest I don't think that explains why things got rapidly worse. I do though think it's partially due to AI content flooding the Internet, but it still doesn't explain things enough.

@sun Honestly i think its more so the shareholders and keeping up with trends. Combine that with their market dominance and a lack of an actual competitor in the search engine market and we got ourselves a bad combo.

@ashiisbest @sun i can't understand this 'magical shareholder make things bad' thinking. shareholders, want money, not bad search results

@lain @ashiisbest It seems to me that in many companies, and I don't really understand how this is but seems to be real, executive performance has decoupled from consequences.

@lain @sun Yeah but they also want to keep up with trends so it makes them look good and be "innovative".
You can't blame shareholders for everything but there is a reason why Apple lets say implements "Apple Intelligence"

@ashiisbest @lain I have heard this before, execs are more beholden to their peers than to the company. I still don't understand how they get away with it though

@sun @ashiisbest i don't think they do in general, but it's an aspect of their existence. companies that have this kidn of dysfunctional leadership can't survive. it might jus be part of the eternal way of things, becoming successful, becoming bureaucratic and finally dying.

@lain @ashiisbest I am just disturbed that industry-wide it is taking so long for correction to happen. People are still fighting like fucking crazy for all the wacky shit while not minding the store

@lain @ashiisbest all of this frivolous stuff is not so bad if the company is delivering the product.

@sun @ashiisbest i'd say it's fiat money rushing it, trying to hold on to any value while simultaneously trying to control. it'll pass.

@ashiisbest @sun 'too big too fail' is a state thing, and i don't see the american state surviving google.

@lain @sun Not entirely. Inevitably a company may go through strife but dying is not really a normal process for a "too big to fail" corporation like Google.

@sun @lain Yeah but if the product looks like this and has a massive brain broken stain on it, you're not gonna want to use it.
