   As someone who speaks English as a second language, I always try to stay away from slang and always speak in the most polite tone I know, because I don't know the subtle nuances of many slang terms. Even today, I witnessed a conversation escalate somewhere on the web because someone used the word “dude,” and I was relieved that I didn't use the word “dude” myself.
