ever think about how we’re the last apes to live in a world ruled by aspirational democracies in a climate favorable for our species survival

Rimu (rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Monday, 03-Jun-2024 12:28:14 JST Rimu @seachanger Yes, I'm reading a mind-blowing book that goes into a LOT of depth on what climate change might do to democracy.
"Climate Levathian", if you want to look it up.

“Joel Wainwright and Geoff Mann argue that rapid climate change will transform the world's political economy and the fundamental political arrangements most people take for granted. The result will be a capitalist planetary sovereignty, a terrifying eventuality that makes the construction of viable, radical alternatives truly imperative.”

Rimu (rimu@mastodon.nzoss.nz)'s status on Monday, 03-Jun-2024 12:56:29 JST Rimu @seachanger The hard part of "capitalist planetary sovereignty" is the "planetary" bit. Basically nation-states would be agreeing to give up some sovereignty to a UN-like structure. It's not a given that they will succeed at that, look at the useless COP process.
2 other alternatives the author calls "Climate Mao" & "Climate Bohemoth" which are *not great* either. There is a fourth which so far the author is being coy about (I'm less than halfway through).
