@larma As a more or less normal Linux user I lack the technical knowledge for anything like that but it would certainly bee a huge step! A Flatpak runtime for Android apps and possibly even Portals integration for their permissions would be a huge step to make them more useful on Linux in general, not just on phones! Ideally stuff like the deffault apps including Android settings and co. would be optional too, at that point they could work basically like any othher native app.
@gamey The binder kernel modules are required for Waydroid because of how Waydroid works. Maybe binder can be implemented in userspace or maybe there are ways to completely get rid of binder while maintaining compatibility with the majority of apps.
I currently don't have the capacity, but would be very much interested in this.
@larma I have my doubts that it will actually happen but I really like the ideas, especially the Flatpak Android runtime even tho the required kernel modules could prevent that if I had to guess.
@gamey Of course I do know Waydroid and improvements to it would likely also be covered (if they're beneficial to any of the #Mobifree apps).
With the flatpak runtime I was rather hinting at something that is better integrated, i.e. by having Android apps turned into Flatpak apps, using Flatpak permissions and sandboxing and so on.
Anyway, I was obviously just dumping ideas to clarify that a lot of things can be funded.
@chfkch @fdroidorg That's not quite correct. #Mobifree subgrant projects must be related to the #Mobifree partner projects, that doesn't rule out projects useful to #LinuxMobile. Some ideas:
- A free software driver for some phone hardware that can be used for @e_mydata and Linux Mobile.
- Improvements to Ubuntu Touch or others that are beneficial to @delta, either @deltatouch or the regular Linux version.
- Android-compatibility layers for Linux Mobile (e.g. an Android flatpak runtime).
@larma @chfkch @fdroidorg @e_mydata @delta @deltatouch That compatibility layer already exists (Waydroid) and there are also Deltachat clients outside of Ubuntu Touch but it would be awesome to see those three things included and technically speaking MicroG is useful in Waydroid already!
@fdroidorg
Remark that it is only for #Android and not for #LinuxMobile ☹️
Hi @chfkch, Mobifree is part of the #NextGenerationInternet initiative* and there are other programmes as well. If you think your project does not fit Mobifree perhaps look at the NGI0 Commons Fund which has a broad scope.
See: https://nlnet.nl/commonsfund/
If you're unsure which fund to pick, choose the open call and mention you are okay with your proposal being allocated to the most suitable fund. https://nlnet.nl/propose/
@larma
Ah okay, well i still cannot apply. I hope we will get a general LinuxMobile App fund and a OS related and a hardware related one.
@fdroidorg @e_mydata @delta @deltatouch
