I mean, all the oligarchs that Putin put in prison WERE guilty.

@0 I think even some of the journalists he jailed they found some legal pretext.

@sun
Foucault, ironically, covers this directly; law is "a system of ordered procedures for the production, regulation, distribution, circulation and functioning of statements"; a manufacturing of "truth" which sits under "power".

@0 that's pretty insightful. Foucalt can have a little boy, as a treat.

@nosleep everyone is guilty of something. it's not what gets you prosecuted. what gets you prosecuted is noncompliance with actual centers of political power.

@sun they are all guilty. that's the mutual trade

@sun i love hearing reports about people who maintain power and relative order for decades while subject to more spying and subterfuge than anyone on earth at any point in history claiming them to be “madmen” or “stupid”

@honeymoon I don't think he's stupid or a madman. Invading Ukraine and thinking it was going to be a cakewalk was a massive mistake though.

@nosleep I understand and agree. I don't mean to imply they were only guilty of minor things. But Putin's jailing of oligarchs is held up as persecution frequently around here. I mean it kind of is since if you're a looter but Putin's friend then you're safe.

@sun of course. but the oligarchs' wealth was built on the rape of a country and its people. the average person may be guilty of cheating or shoplifting. they are guilty of what has now turned into the indirect genocide of the russian ethnos (by simply exterminating all the young men that are able to fight). and of course, they will never face any punishment that is real (as according to the law), because it is all sanctioned. whatever financial miracles 1-2 oligarchs are being prosecuted for is 100% irrelevant compared to everything else the whole class is responsible for. even life in jail is a slap on the wrist, no matter how politically motivated the sentence.

@sun oh i dont think u do im just referring to the way our press talks about him (and xi and the kims etc etc) as if they’re invalids
the only theory that rly makes sense to me with the ukraine stuff is that they were working from bad intelligence and an invasion was judged to be the least bad outcome from a list of bad outcomes
