   Question about Federated: Is this just all posts made from all communities in Mastodon? Like the unfiltered public feed?

     1. They don't all come from Mastodon, they come from the Fediverse. For example, I'm using Calckey while you're using Mastodon. Entirely different software, both client and server wise.
     
     2. Your instance has blocks on other instances that may be bad actors, so you won't see posts from them.

     and I'm using Pleroma on my side here, any services connected to the Fediverse will be able to communicate with each other!
