Florida schools say maintaining student laptops for all is getting too costly
Putting laptops in the hands of thousands of students — and keeping them running and up to date — has proved to be pricey.

@serge @darnell@flipboard.com I agree. I remember hearing about many schools switching over to Chromebook due to the cost of maintenance (even though netbooks are not my ideal device). Other options include to simply not let kids bring the computers home, which would help reduce the cost of maintenance (others have suggested this as well).

Gosh, remember 20 years ago when we were all talking about kids around the world getting laptops for $100 that ran 100% Free/Open Source software that they would be able to fix themselves?

Intel worked so hard to kill that with the rise of the Netbook, and then Apple killed the netbook with tablets.

But now we have companies like Framework and MNT that are building highly fixable machines, and machines of today are far more capable than they were in 2005.

I'm not dismissing the issue of IT costs and ongoing maintenance, but I think this is a fixable problem, if we as a society cared.

Dallas ISD stopped letting elementary kids take their devices home this year. That's dramatically cut the district's repair/replacement costs. And the kids don't really need to take their devices home anyway.

@1dalm @darnell@flipboard.com I agree! Often costs can be reduced by enforcing simple measures.
