   @davidga I always assumed media was copied from server to server — hence the tight filesize restrictions — but I could be totally wrong!!!

     @cabel @davidga some instances run a media proxy, e.g. many Pleroma/Akkoma servers. Others are configured to hotlink directly to origin.
